Crisis at MoBuzz

21 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Online video, Internet, Media

The popular video podcast MoBuzz was ground breaking when it launched in 2004 and has been probably the best produced video podcast covering Internet culture, some gadgets and quirky news from around the Net. Always with a great and somewhat sarcastic tone set by the presenter Karina Stenquist the show has become an Internet phenomena. But since Karina left the show a few months ago there seems to be chaos over at MoBuzz.

The new presenter Susan Hickey replaced Karina but didn´t stay long and during her time the show wasn’t the same as during Karinas time at MoBuzz. And while MoBuzz is looking for a new presenter the competition is growing, GeekBrief has always been a popular tech and gadget show but now Morgan Webb has started another tech/Internet show called WebbAlert which just might steal MoBuzz thunder. We sure hope MoBuzz will find a great presenter again soon, because it would be sad if they would be forgotten.

Live Earth in full motion

07 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Event, Music

Right now Live Earth is playing on stages and TV-sets all around the word promoting a climate friendly lifestyle. But an article on CNN.com questions if this huge event isn’t itself a big climate villain. Massive transports to concerts all around the world and huge amounts of bottled water will probably be consumed on these concerts.

But still, I think the long term positive effect should be much bigger than the short term local effects from this event. And the people behind Live Earth have even made an effort to help people car pool to concerts.

H&M is failing at podcasting

06 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Online video, Brands & branding, Advertising, Media

When H&M launched their video podcast, in May this year, they quickly became the most popular podcast in Sweden. Their first episode was quite good with the right mix of product advertising and other content. But when the second episode was released then didn’t hit the spot, they were relying on the thought that consumers like them so much that would not mind watching their commercials in just another marketing channel. But the problem is that podcasting is not just another marketing channel, consumers turn to podcasts for different reasons but very few, if any, turn to podcasts to watch commercials. Consumers are leaving the TV and radio to avoid commercials and get a more personal type of (ad free) entertainment.

Today H&M are not even on the top 100 list of podcasts in iTunes Store in Sweden. They might climb up to a better position again when a new episode is released, but the whole point is to stay interesting all the time, not just when they push out a new episode and advertise the release massively in stores. People should want to seek out the content (pull) instead of the old school marketing that focuses on pushing out the ads to all consumers weather they want it or not. None of the great podcasts need this type of marketing to get listeners/viewers. You can’t buy listerners/viewers in the same way in the new media landscape. H&M is a huge brand, but that is not enough if they want to succeed in podcasting. The best content wins, not the biggest budget.

That is why H&M is failing at podcasting right now, and they need a new approach if they want to be successful in the future.

The day of the iPhone!

29 Jun 2007 | Tagged as: Apple

Right now big lines of people are waiting for the first shipment of iPhones in the US and you can look at the pictures on Flickr or videos from YouTube to see the enormous interest for this phone. Justin.tv is helping Gizmodo to cover this historic day live if you are that interested in what´s going on right now.

Iphone2

It’s still to early to know for sure that the iPhone will be the success that Apple is counting on, but when Apple announced the battery life many critics were proven wrong. According to GeekBrief here is the expected battery life depending on different uses:

* 8 hours of talk.
* 6 hours of surfing the Internet.
* 7 hours of video watching.
* 24 hours of listening to music.
* 250 hours stand by.

Pretty impressive considering the large screen and the fact that the phone is actually running OS X.

Another thing that has been criticised is the fact that there will be no real third party applications at launch. But this might just be a precaution to make sure that Apple have total control over the user experience and reliability when the phone comes out. Later on they might decide to open up the phone more than just letting developers use Safari and Ajax to create applications for the iPhone.

A war in the Swedish blogosphere

27 Jun 2007 | Tagged as: Blogs, Brands & branding, Media, Communication

There is a very lively debate going on right now in the Swedish blogosphere about a new blog service from the free newspaper Metro. This service promises to pay bloggers per page view. But when Makan Amini launched a blog using this service to raise one million Swedish crowns for charity, Metro decided to shut down this blog.

In a video on YouTube you can hear a representative from Metro claiming that they were not ready for this kind of massive traffic and that they were not quite there yet with ad sales. But is that really justification enough to shut down this blog? And is it even a smart move from Metro?

I don´t think so. This is just the kind of moves from old media companies that totally alienates serious bloggers and is extremely hard, if not impossible, to repair.

Is there a new secret Apple product

11 Jun 2007 | Tagged as: Apple

According to Tech Feed there has been a leak at Apple Inc before the Steve Jobs speech at WWDC tomorrow. Here are some of the news accordning to this unconfirmed “leak”:

- New generation of iMac more integrated with the iPhone and maybe partly brushed metal finish.
- Some great new features in OS X Leopard and and all new Mail, iCal, Photobooth and multiple dashboards and so on,
- More integration with .Mac and from now on maybe .Mac will be included for free with all Mac purchases.
- Some interesting integrations with Google and maybe even Google Apps.
- Updated Safari with some interesting new features, even though it feels like nobody is using it anymore…

And a really interesting part of this leaked document speaks of another iPhone version called iPhone@home which would be like an iPhone but without the actual phone part. But it would have an iSight camera built into it, iChat and have the same interface as the iPhone.

So are these rumors true? We will just have to wait and see until tomorrow.

Everybody is suing everybody who is anybody in IT

11 Jun 2007 | Tagged as: Google

Microsoft wants to sue Linux for a whole bunch of elledged patent violations and now Google sues Microsoft for they way they handle searches in Vista. Google says Microsoft is trying to make it impractical to use any search other than Microsoft’s own search function. No big surprise that Microsoft is trying to dominate this area, that is typical old school Microsoft strategy.
